Video Emma Reads Chapter 0

So I was thinking about how my book reading at the Kingsbridge Inn had to be cancelled (thanks Toni for handling that).  Then I thought – hey I’ll video it for you all to see online instead.  And bonus – I won’t have the extreme nerves I’d expect from doing it in the flesh.

Elizabeth Diamond, the woman who’s helping me with my book, doesn’t think this section should be included.  I’m not sure how I’ll resolve it…but here it is…to give you a flavour.  It’s VERY different from the rest of the book because the voice is not the me that appears later in my life/book.  Elizabeth thought that laying it out like this at the beginning will put off half the readers who are not spiritual in their beliefs.  I’ll leave that up to the publisher.  Maybe she’s right.  Draw more people in…on the psychosis theme and then BAM they get hit with the bigness of it all.

What do you think?

Please be gentle because it is excruciating for me to watch and sharing is probably the most vulnerable thing I’ll ever do.

I can’t imagine the courage it takes to talk about something so intensely personal like this. Your reading style does not betray any nerves that you mention in your introduction. Thank you for sharing to help others and to maybe inspire others to the same kind of personal bravery. I look forward to discovering the rest of the book.

Thanks Chris. Lovely words. The deep breath at the beginning is me breathing into my nerves to try to settle myself. You can’t see my heart pounding! It is nerve wracking but I’ve learnt to handle that through my episodes as they’re are so full of anxiety. Love to you and yours. <3

Im not particularly spiritual, but this is powerful, clearly heartfelt writing – which is brave, and has to be how it should be if you are writing something meaningful, and digging for truth.

I think its wise to follow advice: You aren’t just writing for yourself – you want an audience. A publisher will only be interested if they can sell a few copies – and they know what sells. Can you find common ground? Common compromise? Editing is a nightmare! Isn’t it??!

You’ve heard the advice – when travelling listen to the locals (in this case its your agent, the publishers – or Elizabeth?)

Great to see you again – very best of luck with it.

BTW for a pop – and (very!) unspiritual – look at depression you could do worse than check out Ruby Wax’s books – might have some hints on adding a light touch to your writing.
Not trying to be critical, have you written 8 chapters already??!! Cool!
And yes! if you have the choice The Infinite has to be a great title for chapter 8!
    All the best

Thanks Eddie. I’ll read Ruby’s books. Mine gets funnier with the tone of it. Reading other memoirs is something I’m enjoying doing and have ‘I know why the caged bird sings’ next on my list. I really appreciate your advice. You’ve been through it already (the publishing process) and that’s helpful. 🙂
